Tankless Hot Water Heaters provide hot water "on-demand" or endlessly. Hot water heaters with tanks rely on keeping a reservoir of hot water handy for when you might need it. If the reservoir is emptied too quickly, the unit will not be able to keep up with the demand because tanked heaters take some time to heat water and you will "run out of hot water". Obviously the size of the tank will determine what is "too quickly". And of course, the heater must continue to keep the water in the tank hot even if it is not used for a long time.

Tankless hot water heaters heat the water as you need it. They do not store the previously heated water in a tank - thus they are "Tankless".
